Saint Sebastian Tied to a Column by Albrecht Durer (undated) is a finely executed, dramatic engraving depicting the iconic saint tied up and riddled with large arrows in his martyrdom. The fluid, classical drawing and flowing contrapposto pose of the subject demonstrate that Durer had absorbed the lessons of the High Italian Renaissance and introduced the lessons of classical antiquity into the art of Northern Europe. Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a German painter of the Northern Renaissance whose work as an engraver, printmaker, mathematician and theorist secured his reputation as one of the greatest artists of Europe. His many paintings, portraits, altarpieces, watercolors, and engravings were the first in the Northern Renaissance to use classical motifs from antiquity and the Italian Renaissance.
