Never fear...this young skate was returned to the ocean to grow up and have it's own babies. I placed this animal in the "rays" category (closest to be found) but it really isn't a ray. Skates hatch from eggs (black egg cases with tendrils are found washed up along the shore), while rays give birth to live young. Skates live on the ocean floor - note how flat they are and how the coloration helps camouflage them.
