The space shuttle orbiter Columbia is bathed in light in this nocturnal scene at Launch Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida as preparations continued in March 1981 for the first orbital test flight of NASA's reusable space transportation system. Astronauts John W. Young and Robert L. Crippen manned Columbia on that historic first flight.
