The rise of censorship and surveillance in Western societies has become a pressing concern, particularly with regards to the curbing of free speech. Historically, the West has prided itself on its commitment to individual liberties and the protection of fundamental rights, including the freedom of expression. However, recent trends and developments have led to a growing erosion of these principles. One major driver of this shift has been the proliferation of social media platforms and the increasing reliance on digital technologies. While these tools have undoubtedly democratised access to information and enabled unprecedented levels of global connectivity, they have also created new avenues for censorship and surveillance. Tech giants, often in collaboration with governments, have begun to exert significant control over online discourse, determining what content is permissible and what is not. This has led to the silencing of dissenting voices, the suppression of marginalised perspectives, and the homogenisation of public opinion. Furthermore, the rise of "hate speech" laws and "anti-disinformation" initiatives has provided governments with pretext to crack down on unpopular speech and stifle debate. While the stated aim of these measures is to protect vulnerable groups and prevent the spread of false information, they have often been used to selectively censor viewpoints that challenge the dominant narrative or question the policies of the ruling elite. Another concerning development is the growing tendency of governments to monitor and collect data on their citizens, often without transparency or accountability. Mass surveillance programs, justified in the name of national security, have been used to gather intimate details about individuals' online activities, associations, and behaviours. This information can then be used to identify and target perceived opponents, dissidents, or "troublemakers" – further undermining the exercise of free speech. The consequences of these trends are far-reaching. They have led to a culture of self-censorship, where individuals hesitate to express themselves honestly or critically for fear of being surveilled, silenced, or sanctioned. This has had a chilling effect on open debate, intellectual enquiry, and artistic expression – all vital components of a healthy and functioning democracy. Moreover, the Athenian notion of parrhesia – the right to speak the truth without fear of retribution – has given way to an obsession with "sensitivity," "security," and "comfort." Comfort and security, of course, are noble pursuits, but not at the expense of free expression. In light of these developments, it is imperative that we reassert the importance of free speech in our societies. We must challenge the current trajectory towards censorship and surveillance, recognising that the benefits of these measures (if they exist) are far outweighed by the risks to individual liberty, intellectual diversity, and the very fabric of our democratic institutions. In contrast, more traditional Enlightenment thinkers valued free speech as a cornerstone of intellectual, scientific, and personal progress – fostering ingenuity, education, and government accountability, rejecting censorship from Church orthodoxy in markets and academia.
