This gorgeous bloom is a Phalaenopsis Orchid with a red "lip". Orchids are truly fascinating plants; one of the world's favourite flavours and fragrances comes from an orchid: vanilla. The vanilla bean is actually an orchid seed pod and the scrapings from the inside of the bean, often used in ice creams and by chefs, are actually millions and millions of orchid seeds. There's also a lot of stories, myths and legends pertaining to orchids. The name "orchid" comes from the Greek word "orchis" which means (of all things) "testicle". The legend of Orchis, who was the son of a nymph and satyr, ended badly (as they always seem to). His death was particularly gruesome, as he was torn apart. His father begged the gods to return his son to him; they declined. However, he was offered some measure of consolation as the remains became orchids.
