Alms For The Poet

Alms For The Poet a play on words for the saying “Alms for the poor?” It began as a joke among poet friends after viewing a PBS documentary about decline in poetry in America due to the lack of public interest, education, and financial support. After noting the lack of resources that most publishing companies have for printing poetry, emerging poet Anissia West decided to produce an Alms For The Poet tee for herself to wear. Since then, other poets and spoken word artists have put in requests for their own version of Alms For The Poet gear including postage stamps for mailing manuscripts. Anissia was delighted to supply this. Alms For The Poet is poetry, it is activism, it is a state of mind. Gone are the days to financial love for the poetic arts. Poets who want their voices heard must find a way to do it cheaply so that consumers don’t have to pay (which means that the artist has to pay— but the artist is broke already) The small amount of royalties that the poet receives from sales will go toward chapbook publications, submissions and contest entry fees. *note: by request of friends and relatives, there are now different themed items available here.
