About

California Drop Cloth is the original hand-painted upholstery fabric by Leonard Pollikof and Eric Jones. In 1978, Pollikof and Jones started hand-painting yardage together in a storefront on Olympic Boulevard in Los Angeles. On a single table five yards long with a roll of cotton duck, they employed a tableau of foam brushes, toilet brushes, earwax bulbs and just about anything else that could administer paint expressively. The initial pieces were unique and a showroom in the Pacific Design Center started to carry Pollikof's patterns Half-Moon Bay, Sand & Shells, Basketweave, Balboa, Ciccolini, Paloma, and Tiger Tails. The second collection featured Jones' designs including Morocco, Marbella, Birds of Paradise, Bananas, Clover, Water Lilies, Waterline Lilies, China Rose, Ravenswing, Sea Spray, and Feline. Jones won the ROSCOE Award and Pacifica Awards for his designs. A mention in Egon Von Furstenburg's book The Power Look at Home boosted interest in the company, and sales took off. Jones took over the design and production duties while Pollikof focused on selling. Within less than a year the company was represented in the finest designer showrooms across the USA and Europe. California Drop Cloth had grown exponentially with a crew comprised mainly of Jones' friends from Art Center College of Design. The fabrics were featured in Paris Vogue, on sets of television shows, and in the homes of celebrities including Johnny Carson and George Harrison. California Drop Cloth is in the collection of the Smithsonian Design Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and highlighted in publications including 'American Design 1975-2000'. 'California Drop Cloth' is a registered trademark of Jones Studio Ltd.
