Summertime Two | Mary Cassatt

Summertime 2 (1894) by Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) is a charming Impressionist scene of two women enjoying a peaceful boat ride on a summer day. Seated together in a small boat, the women are surrounded by ducks gliding across the water, creating a relaxed atmosphere of leisure and quiet companionship. Cassatt uses a fresh palette of blues, greens, and warm accents to capture the reflections and gentle movement of the water, while her loose, expressive brushwork gives the scene a lively, sunlit quality. The close composition places the viewer alongside the passengers, emphasising the intimacy of the moment and the simple pleasures of outdoor life. This delightful painting reflects Cassatt’s interest in women’s everyday experiences and her distinctive approach to Impressionist colour and composition.
