Svartifoss Iceland Postcard

Svartifoss, the 'Black Falls,' is located in the Skaftafell Nature Reserve and is famous for its backdrop of dark, hanging basalt columns. These hexagonal pillars were formed by slow-cooling lava and have inspired the architecture of several Icelandic landmarks, including Hallgrímskirkja. The waterfall itself is narrow and elegant, falling gracefully over the edge of the dark columns into a pool of tumbled rocks. The contrast between the white water and the obsidian-like stone pillars creates a sharp, geometric beauty that feels both ancient and modern.
