Tapestry

Tapestry is a form of textile art, traditionally woven by hand on a loom, where colourful threads are woven together to create intricate designs and images. Unlike paintings or drawings, tapestries have a textural quality, with the threads forming both the image and the surface of the artwork. Historically, tapestries have been used for various purposes, including as decorative wall hangings, insulation in cold environments, and as a means of storytelling or commemorating important events. They often depict scenes from mythology, religion, history, or nature, and can range in size from small pieces suitable for domestic settings to large-scale works intended for public spaces. The process of creating a tapestry typically involves careful planning and preparation, with the design sketched out on a grid known as a cartoon. The weaver then selects and combines threads of different colours and textures to bring the design to life, using techniques such as interlocking, dovetailing, and hatching to create the desired effects. In addition to traditional hand-woven tapestries, modern techniques such as digital weaving and jacquard looms have expanded the possibilities for tapestry art, allowing for greater detail and complexity in designs.
