Col. Sherrell, Supt. of Public Buildings and Grounds, issued an order that bathing suits at the Washington bathing beach must not be over six inches above the knee. This image shows a bathing beach "cop" measuring legs in 1922. It's a remarkable comparison with the standards several decades later. The postcard is good for laughs, frames well and works in shabby chic decor.
