The Dancing Class | Edgar Degas Card

The Dancing Class (c. 1870) by Edgar Degas (1834–1917) offers an intimate early glimpse into the world of Parisian ballet. A group of young dancers gathers in a rehearsal space, accompanied by musicians and other figures, as they prepare for their lessons. The ballerinas’ graceful poses, delicate costumes, and attentive expressions bring a sense of movement and quiet anticipation to the small composition. Degas uses subtle brushwork, warm neutral tones, and carefully observed details to capture the atmosphere of a dance studio rather than the glamour of a theatrical performance. Painted on wood, this early work marks Degas’ first depiction of a ballet class and reveals the beginnings of his lifelong fascination with dancers, movement, and the discipline of classical ballet.
