The Morrigan is a dark Goddess who harkens back to the oldest Celtic tribes, she has also been called to by other names, Morrigu, Phantom Queen, Great Queen, and Battle Crow, to name a few, and has been linked by some to Morgan le Fey of Arthurian legend. She was one of the mystic ancients known as the Tuatha de Dannon (Tribe of the Goddess Danu.) Her sacred days are Samhain, October 31, and Feast of the Morrigan Jan. 7. Her oldest stories come to us from the 12th century manuscript, The Lebor Gabala Erenn (The Book of the Taking of Ireland, or The Book of Invasions) which is a book of poems relating to the early history and legends of Ireland. Other aspects of The Morrigan include Badb, Macha, and Neiman, in one of her more terrifying guises, The Washer at the Ford, the prophetess manifests in a vision washing the blood from clothes of soldiers who will soon surrender their life in battle. Called a nightmare by some, she is a shape-shifter and said to appear as a crow above the battlefield. She is a fierce Goddess who as the mistress of battle strikes fear into the hearts of her opponents, but she is also a Goddess of sovereignty, and the fertile earth. She protects the very land and it's people. She is also tied with prophesy, wisdom, and the cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
