The painting depicts a yellow house located in Arles, France, where Van Gogh rented four rooms in the right wing. The guest room was occupied by Paul Gauguin for nine weeks during their time together in the town. The left wing of the building was home to a grocery store, adding a touch of ordinary life to the scene. The structure, however, was later severely damaged during an Allied bombing raid in World War II and eventually demolished.
