Three Peoria Indians 1861-1869 George Catlin The Peoria tribe were located east of the Mississippi River and north of the Ohio River. The Peoria were among the many Illinois tribes encountered by the explorers, Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet. French Jesuit missionaries converted tribal members to Roman Catholicism. The Peoria tribe belong to Algonquian-speaking peoples whose pre-Columbian ancestors were part of the Cahokia culture of present southern Illinois. The Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma are now scattered throughout the United States but maintain their tribal headquarters in Miami, Oklahoma. George Catlin was an American adventurer, lawyer, painter, author, and traveller, who specialised in portraits of Native Americans in the American Frontier. Travelling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians.
