Užupis District Lithuania Postcard

Užupis is one of Vilnius's oldest and most enchanting districts, separated from the Old Town by the flowing Vilnia River. Historically a neighbourhood of artisans and the city's poor, it underwent a dramatic transformation in the late 20th century when artists, poets, and bohemian souls moved in, drawn by its low rents and crumbling historic charm. On April 1, 1997, the residents playfully declared the district an independant republic, complete with its own president, flag, currency, an army of twelve, and a famously whimsical constitution containing articles like 'Everyone has the right to die, but this is not an obligation.' Today, Užupis is celebrated as a thriving creative hotspot filled with art galleries, cosy cafes, unique street art, and fashion boutiques. The neighbourhood retains an idyllic, village-like atmosphere with its winding cobblestone streets, overgrown courtyards, and historic architecture. Visitors flock to see the prominent Bronze Angel of Užupis sculpture standing tall in the main square, symbolising the artistic freedom and rebirth of the district, making it a must-visit cultural treasure within Lithuania's capital.
