The delicate black and white vintage botanical drawing of the carnivorous plant is by artist Isaac Sprague, from The Genera of the Plants of the United States, published in 1849, author Asa Grey. The Venus Flytrap, scientific name Dionaea muscipula, catches and digests its prey in the trapping structure, which is formed by the terminal part of the plants leaves, and is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. Native to coastal North and South Carolina, it grows in open bogs. It is also a popular cultivated plant.
