Self-Portrait / Portrait of the Artist (Portrait de l'artiste), painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This late self-portrait presents Van Gogh against a restless field of blue and turquoise brushstrokes that echo the movement found in his Saint-Rémy landscapes. Painted during the final year of his life, it belongs to a small group of self-portraits in which he tested different backgrounds, clothing and degrees of finish. The intense gaze and close framing keep attention on the face while the surrounding strokes create a strong sense of rhythmic movement.
