The Fields / Wheat Fields / The Plain at Auvers, painted in 1890 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. Broad fields dominate the composition, with paths and low horizons opening the landscape into a wide expanse. During his brief stay at Auvers, Van Gogh repeatedly returned to wheat fields as subjects that allowed him to explore movement, weather and the changing character of the countryside. The loose, directional strokes make the surface feel active even when the scene itself is almost empty.
