Vincent van Gogh - Vase with Irises Paper Plate

Still Life: Vase with Irises Against a Yellow Background, painted in 1890 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. This upright bouquet was one of two iris still lifes Van Gogh painted at Saint-Rémy in May 1890. He deliberately set the violet flowers against a striking yellow background, seeking an intense opposition of complementary colours. Thick, vigourous brushwork gives the stems and blossoms a decorative force that recalls both his Arles still lifes and his continuing admiration for bold Japanese design.
