Wheatfield under Thunderclouds, painted in 1890 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. A vast band of wheat stretches beneath a darkening blue sky and heavy clouds in the wide double-square format Van Gogh favored during his final weeks. He painted the canvas shortly after a difficult visit to Paris, simplifying the landscape into large horizontal masses of field and weather. Van Gogh linked these late wheatfields with feelings of sadness and extreme loneliness, yet he also described the countryside itself as healthy and invigorating.
