The hydrangea is a glorious, flowering shrub. The flowers can be pink, purple, blue, cream and, depending on the soil, magical combinations of these colours. In some varieties of hydrangea, the pH of the soil will determine the colour. Blue requires acidic soil, with a pH of about 5.0 to 5.5. Pink or purple requires an alkaline soil, with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0. Neutral soil will generally result in cream-coloured petals, but you can also get what some call "blurple" (blue and purple). Like clusters of tiny butterflies, the small florets gather into stunning spheres. The hydrangea is said to represent grace, friendship, lavish beauty and the preservation of love that lasts forever. This latter sentiment is likely why white hydrangeas are so popular for bridal bouquets.
