I consider my paintings portraits of flowers since I seek to depict not only the characteristics of the species, but the individuality of the specific flower that is my subject. Each painting begins with hands-on time in my own garden, followed by photographing individual flowers and translating the images into paint. Exaggerating the size of a flower and using a limited palette allows me to accentuate the shape and the flowing lines, capturing the sensuality of the flower. Flowers are given and received on special occasions, planted in our gardens, and observed beside roads on a daily basis—often without much thought. I would like for my paintings to encourage viewers to slow down and appreciate nature’s brilliant, mysterious plan.
