Sophisticated Innocence

Art transforms sorrow to joy and loss to triumph. In particular, I am interested in the connection between art and words, illustrating stories and rendering concepts visible. Beginning as a child with inspiration from East Asian brush painting and calligraphy, I am now drawn toward creating a balance between the simplicity of Eastern art and the complexity of classical Western aesthetics. Though I enjoy experimenting with a variety of media, I prefer traditional materials such as oil paint, charcoal, and ink, as I feel that these allow a closer connection between my hand and my artwork. In another sense, I am traditional in that I seek to illustrate the values of truth, beauty, and love. Creating art is an act of faith; I create to honor my Creator, and I hope that instead of contributing to the darkness of the world, my work uplifts the soul and reflects the dignity of life.
