About

Being afflicted with severe narcolepsy has become a blessing in disguise. My disease took my career in May of 2015, when it became too dangerous to continue working. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to my family and my art. While it’s extremely limiting living with narcolepsy, I am grateful to discover my passion and explore my potential. When asked why I paint animals exclusively, I have a habit of saying to people; we're all made of the same stuff, just put together differently. Through paint, I attempt to portray animals as equal members of this beautiful, yet troubled, planet. Animals have a soul. If you look very closely, you can see it in their eyes. If you take the time to listen, you can hear them. Sometimes, their voices are very small, but always there. In my paintings, I try to project the image of animals as I see them. Whether set against a backdrop of colorful splashes or in a realistic setting, my paintings are of animals that have a voice. They talk to each other, they talk to us, and I try to capture this intelligence, this soulful emotion that few take the time to appreciate. I have no formal training and picked up my first watercolor paintbrush in December, 2013; because an artist friend told me watercolor was too hard and I shouldn’t attempt it. That person is now my biggest fan and I wouldn’t be where I am without their knowing my stubbornness would get the better of me. Narcolepsy has stolen the life I had planned, but it has given me the opportunity to be the fighter I have become. With rare diseases, I believe we all have to make a choice: let it run our lives, or, as I believe most people choose, we can fight, Loud and Proud.
