Vintage Java Travel Advertisement Coaster
Paper labels have been used since the early 1880s. They were introduced to America by European artists, and this printing process became known as lithography. This was one of the first forms of commercial art.
This attractive round vintage label is advertising the “Hotel des Indes” in Java, Indonesia. The capital and largest city of Indonesia, on the northeast coast of Java, was renamed Jakarta after Indonesia became independant in 1949. It was formerly known as Batavia.
